Hi gem

I have only just picked up on you and Bert but i know how you feel when they first started me on sticks they started me on elbow crutchs and then down to sticks at first i found one was no good but i have two now but the new funky ones are great and to keep your stick in one place you can buy a stick on hook that holds your stick .s in place and if you but one of those lace hooks that goround your stick and on your wrist it helps you keep you stick/s with you and upright. I like you found it hard to start with to keep my sticks upright when i was noe using them. but me like you and a lot more of use use this as our staff to keep us on our feet.

good luck with it and remember you can get coulored was to suite your outfit.

good luck

Audrey.

Hiya Gem,

I'm 26 and i got my walking stick in august so i totally know how you feel - i spent weeks dreading meeting people i know in the street - but i guess once you have told them once, then they get over it, or you can always hide! I named my stick Michael Caine (and then got a super awesome blue one and named it michaela).

As irritating as it is needing to use a stick, i sometimes pop over the road without it and it makes you realise that beign a bit more stable is actually worth the annoyingness and the people looking at you. And - just for you, i have compiled some benefits...
a) its well handy in the snow
b) a walking stick wrapped in tinsel is exceedingly effective in hailing buses at night
c) if something is out of reach (eg in the supermarket) you can hook it down with the stick
d) you can trip annoying people up with it
e) you can make good smiley faces etc in snow that is totally inaccessible to other people (e.g. you can poke the stick through railings and stuff)
f) you can always go to a halloween party as Charlie Chaplin

maybe we should start a competition for who has had the most ridiculous comment on their walking aides...
the other week on a night out a girl i know asked me if i had my stick as a joke (i used to try to not take it out to pubs) you should have seen her blush when i told her i was getting a hip replacement!

Have fun

Laura

Hi everyone

Thanks for telling me your stories, it's really useful to hear how the rest of you have got on with your walking sticks. And I'm loving the ideas for the alternative uses Smile

I'm still incredibly conscious of it when using it at work. Everytime I have to walk through the door I find myself taking a deep breath and staring straight forwards so I don't make eye contact with anyone. But a few people at work have asked me about it and I'm sure the gossipers have spread it around that I'm using one so I'm getting less funny looks each day. I absolutely refuse to use it for walking around the office though - only for walking in and out of the place.

Today my other half and I did a little bit of shopping, Matalan, Boots and Tesco's to get a few things and I decided not to take my stick and to just link his arm. Big mistake! Even though I feel I'm walking at a good pace, I'm actually walking really slowly. And I felt like I had to force my legs to move forward they were that stiff. Felt very wobbly and unsafe. So I guess it just goes to show that I do need it. I'm going to invest in one of the ones from Switch Sticks (nothing too outrageous though!) so it can fold up and go out of the way at work.

Oh, and I'll be changing his name to Jimmy - it suits him better!
